Plea for help on illegal asbestos dumping in the North West

A lorry load of asbestos was found to be dumped on the Ribble Link way in Preston on Tuesday 31 May 2011. The Environment Agency in the North West is appealing for information to find how this illegal waste came to be there.

A member of the public informed the Environment Agency of the dumping through its incident hotline number 0800 80 70 60.

Officers who attended the scene found that it contained broken asbestos sheeting which also covered bags of asbestos waste.

British Waterways, who own the land, have now cordoned off and covered this hazardous waste, and are employing approved contractors to remove and dispose of the waste correctly.

Paul Shelton, investigating for the Environment Agency said, “ We are urging anyone with any information as to the source of the waste to come forward so that we can ensure that these criminals do not continue to dump waste illegally. “

If you have any information on this dumping please contact Paul Shelton, Environmental Crime Officer on 01772 714211, or if you spot any other environmental incidents call our 24 hour incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60.

Asbestos is really something that everyone in a old building should check out, my work had it and all the employers went for a lawsuit.
